DiGirolamo Selected to Continue Leadership of Human Services Committee in House
HARRISBURG – In continuing his work to help Pennsylvanians in need, Rep. Gene DiGirolamo (R-Bucks) will again serve as chairman of the House Human Services Committee for the 2013-14 session.

Speaker-designee of the House Sam Smith (R-Jefferson/Indiana/Armstrong) appointed DiGirolamo to the post for the second time.

The House Human Services Committee has oversight of issues within the Department of Public Welfare and the new Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to continue my service with this committee and to help lead issues which will make the quality of life easier for those with physical and intellectual disabilities and those with other special needs,” said DiGirolamo. “These groups of people rely on the Commonwealth for some of their most basic needs, and it is our job to make sure they are not left behind by our ever-changing world. I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance the issues important to the recipients and providers of human services while also making sure that every tax dollar is spent to its maximum efficiency.”

During the 2011-12 legislative session, DiGirolamo took an active role in helping to ensure that a secretary was named to the new Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs and worked to reduce budget cuts for many human service line items.

Under DiGirolamo’s leadership, the committee examined the issues faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities and the families who care for them, and he spearheaded hearings on the funding and payment policies of the Department of Public Welfare’s Office of Developmental Programs.

Also last term, DiGirolamo authored legislation, Act 148 of 2012, to create methadone death and incident review teams in cases where methadone was either a primary or secondary cause of death. Those teams will help give Pennsylvania officials more information regarding the circumstances involving methadone-related deaths.
