DiGirolamo Selected as Republican Chairman of House Labor Relations Committee
1/23/2007
Rep. Gene DiGirolamo (R-Bucks) has been selected as Republican chairman of the House Labor Relations Committee by GOP Leader Sam Smith (R-Jefferson).

“This committee assignment is one that I have been interested in for some time,” DiGirolamo said. “In this role, I will be able to play a more active part in helping meet the needs of both workers and employers in Pennsylvania.”

Smith appointed DiGirolamo to the post because of his strong leadership and listening skills. “During his time in Harrisburg, Gene has always demonstrated himself as a leader and has shown his abilities as a good listener,” he said. “I believe those are two good qualities that a chairman of the Labor Relations Committee needs to reach consensus on what are often very tough issues.”

The Labor Relations Committee considers legislation dealing with the state’s work force, including issues specifically directed at the relationship between employers and employees. During the last few years, the committee has worked on improvements to the statewide Uniform Construction Code and increases to the state’s minimum wage as well as other workforce development issues. The committee also has legislative oversight of the Department of Labor and Industry, as well as the workers’ compensation and unemployment compensation systems.

“I am very pleased that Representative Smith has appointed me to this post,” DiGirolamo said. “I am excited to begin working with members on both sides of the aisle in order to make Pennsylvania a better state for both our employers and workforce.”

This is DiGirolamo’s first full committee chairmanship in the state House. He previously served as secretary of the House Appropriations Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Public Utilities within the House Consumer Affairs Committee. He has served on special task forces to study Pennsylvania’s election system and to oversee the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletics Association (PIAA).
