Human Services to Hold Hearing on Status of Newborn Screening Law

WHAT: The House Human Services Committee will hold a public hearing on the status of the implementation of Act 148 of 2014, also known as Hannah’s Law, which expanded Pennsylvania’s program to screen newborns for a variety of genetic diseases and conditions. Early screening is imperative so that children can receive treatment as early as possible.

WHO: Reps. Gene DiGirolamo (R-Bucks) and Angel Cruz (D-Philadelphia), chairmen, Human Services Committee; and members of the Human Services Committee. Those expected to offer testimony include parent advocates, Vikki Pizzullo, mother of Hannah Ginion, and Lesa Brackbill, mother of Tori Brackbill; Dr. Michael Yudell, associate professor and chairman, Community Health and Prevention, Drexel University, and vice chairman, Pennsylvania Newborn Screening and Follow-up Technical Advisory Board; Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Karen Murphy; and Pennsylvania Physician General Rachel Levine.
