Bensalem Lawmaker Honored with Kennedy Award

To recognize the 50th anniversary of the Community Mental Health Centers Act authorized by President John F. Kennedy, the Northeast Community Center for Behavioral Health presented Rep. Gene DiGirolamo (left) with the John F. Kennedy Memorial Award during a ceremony on Nov. 15. DiGirolamo was cited for his efforts in advocating for issues related to drug and alcohol treatment and prevention, physical and intellectual disabilities, and individuals with mental illness, along with the expansion of Medicaid. DiGirolamo is pictured with Tom Durkin (right), chairman of the board, and former Congressman Patrick Kennedy (center). The Northeast Community Center for Behavioral Health is one of the original Community Mental Health Centers in Philadelphia established through funding from the act. The award is named for the Kennedy family for its historical commitment and advocacy on behalf of those in need of mental health, intellectual disabilities, and addictions treatment services.
